Every month, those who menstruate can face a wide variety of challenges. Cramps, fatigue, emotional problems and irritability can leave us desperate for solutions to help. For people who suffer from PMS or premenstrual syndrome, the biggest challenge of all is that it happens month after month – meaning it’s only a matter of time before symptoms start again.
Sometimes PMS symptoms and hormone function are directly linked. Estrogen and progesterone are two sex hormones that are essential for the menstrual cycle and for fertility; think of them as chemical messengers that perform specific functions in the body. If one hormone does not function properly, it is possible to disrupt the function of others. The menstrual cycle is a feedback system in which the rise and fall of sex hormones depend on each other.
Between exercise, diet changes, and preparing for that “time of the month,” what else can we do to transition in and out of our cycle more smoothly? Let’s explore three herbal allies that can help relieve discomfort associated with premenstrual syndrome.
Vitex berry
Low levels of progesterone have been linked to PMS symptoms. Vitex berry (Vitex agnus castus), also called Chasteberry, Chaste tree berry and monk’s pepper, is a great ally to combat this. The peppercorn-like fruit of the Vitex berry has an interesting history of use to suppress sexual desire. It was often placed on the table of monasteries during the Holy Roman Empire for those who practiced celibacy. Little did they know that it actually had quite something opposite effect.
Known as a regulator of menstruation and sexuality, recent studies have shown that this fruit supports healthy progesterone levels. When sufficient progesterone is present and the feedback system functions properly, balanced hormones are achieved. In some cases, this can relieve the discomforts of PMS, such as bloating, breast tenderness, irritability and headaches. Vitex is usually taken as a tincture or long infusion and is aromatic, relaxing and restorative to the reproductive system.
Skull cap
Perhaps one of the most versatile herbs that has an affinity with many different body systems Scutellaria lateriflora. Also known as Skullcap, this flowering perennial is a member of the mint family. Scullcap is native to North America and has a strong history of traditional use by Native Americans, especially among the Cherokee. This herb calms the mind and nervous system, making it an effective ally for those suffering from PMS.
Flavonoids, or plant compounds that regulate cellular activity, can help relieve the cramps associated with menstruation. However, Scullcap really shines for its calming effect on the nervous system. The stabilizing and restorative nature of this plant can provide relief from emotional distress during difficult cycles. Typically used as a tea or tincture, Scullcap combines beautifully with Feverfew, Passionflower and Hops for additional mood support.
Cramp
Cramps are one of the most common discomforts of premenstrual syndrome and are often an indication that our period is approaching. Cramp, or Viburnum opulus, can relax tense reproductive organs to provide relief. This medicine can be taken at the first signs of an impending cycle, even before the cramps usually start. The reproductive tract contains smooth muscle, a type of muscle that contracts without any voluntary control. Crampbark’s relaxing effect on smooth muscle is especially helpful, as it targets the systems where the cramps originate. Because smooth muscles help regulate blood flow throughout the body, it is imperative that they are relaxed and functioning optimally.
Crampbark also contains an active ingredient called methyl salicylate, which supports a healthy inflammatory response. It’s important to remember that cramps are often a natural mechanism to protect a vulnerable part of the body, and while it can be disabling and uncomfortable, remedies like Crampbark can help. When combined with magnesium, it is useful for muscle relaxation, cramps, body aches and headaches associated with PMS.
