While being aware matters, it’s not enough to help those experiencing treatment right now. If someone in your life is facing a mastectomy this year, or has one scheduled, there’s a more useful way to spend this month than posting about it: actually getting ready to help.

Most Breast Cancer Awareness Month messaging focuses on early detection and fundraising, both genuinely important, but neither addresses what a patient and her support system actually need in the weeks around surgery.
