5 Things You Wish Your Partner Knew About ED

Let’s talk about the thing nobody wants to bring up at dinner: erectile dysfunction. ED gets whispered about, joked about, and Googled at 2 a.m., but it rarely gets talked about out loud between the two people it affects most. And that’s a shame, because a little honest conversation can take a ton of pressure off both of you.

So if you’ve ever wished your partner just got it, here are five things about erectile dysfunction we wish every couple knew. Spoiler: you’re not alone, it’s not your fault, and it’s very fixable.

1. ED Is Way More Common Than You Think

If it feels like you’re the only couple dealing with this, relax. You are in extremely crowded company. Erectile dysfunction affects nearly 40% of men over 40 and more than half of men over 60 (Visseren et al., European Heart Journal, 2021). Even among younger guys, it’s not rare.

Translation: ED is a normal part of a lot of men’s lives at some point. It is not a character flaw, a sign of getting old before your time, or anything to be ashamed of. It’s a medical condition, full stop.

2. It’s Often About Blood Flow, Not Desire

Here’s the big one. When a man can’t get or keep an erection, his partner’s first thought is sometimes, “Is it me? Is he not attracted to me anymore?” The answer, overwhelmingly, is no.

A man’s ED is not a measure of how attracted to or in love with his partner he is (Practice Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Fertility and Sterility, 2023). Erections are mostly a plumbing-and-wiring situation: an erection depends on healthy blood flow and nerve signals to the penis, and the most common causes of ED are things like atherosclerosis (hardened arteries), diabetes, and obesity (Najari and Kashanian, JAMA, 2016). Stress, anxiety, certain medications, smoking, and alcohol all pile on too.

So when the body isn’t cooperating, it’s rarely about the relationship. It’s about biology.

3. ED Can Be an Early Warning Sign For Your Heart

This is the part we really want partners to hear, because it can be a genuine lifesaver. The same small blood vessels that power an erection are the canary in the coal mine for the bigger vessels in the heart.

Erectile dysfunction frequently shows up 2 to 5 years before heart problems like coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke, and men with ED carry a higher risk of cardiovascular events (Visseren et al., European Heart Journal, 2021). That’s why ED should never be dismissed as “just a bedroom issue.”

If your partner is struggling with ED, encourage him to see a doctor, not only to fix the symptom but to check on his heart, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. Supporting that visit is one of the most loving things you can do.

4. It Takes a Toll on Both of You, So Talk About It

ED doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Men with ED commonly deal with low self-esteem, anxiety, guilt, and a fear of disappointing their partner, and depression rates are high in this group (American Psychiatric Association, DSM-5-TR, 2022).

But partners feel it too. The partner of someone with ED can experience their own frustration, reduced satisfaction, and even worries that they’re no longer desired or that something’s wrong in the relationship (Li et al., Nature Reviews Urology, 2016). When nobody talks about it, those worries grow in the dark.

The fix isn’t fancy: open, judgment-free communication. Bringing your partner into the conversation, and sometimes into the treatment plan, reduces his anxiety and protects your intimacy. Intimacy is a team sport, and this is no different.

5. ED Is Very Treatable, So There’s Real Hope

If you take one thing from this whole post, make it this: ED is one of the most treatable conditions out there, and most men can get back to a satisfying sex life.

Treatment usually starts simple and steps up as needed:

  • Lifestyle first. Weight loss, a Mediterranean-style diet, regular exercise, quitting smoking, and cutting back on alcohol all measurably improve erectile function (Li et al., The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 2026; American Urological Association Guideline, Burnett et al., 2018).
  • Oral medications. PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil are the first-line prescription treatment and help the majority of men (American Urological Association Guideline, Burnett et al., 2018).
  • Beyond the pill. For men who don’t respond to pills, options include penile injections, vacuum erection devices, and penile implants, which have high satisfaction rates (Najari and Kashanian, JAMA, 2016).

A quick but important safety note: ED medications aren’t right for everyone (for example, men taking nitrates), so these should always be started with a doctor rather than ordered off a sketchy website.

The Bottom Line for Couples

Erectile dysfunction is common, it’s usually not about desire, it can flag your heart health, it affects both partners, and it’s very treatable. The worst thing you can do is stay silent. The best thing? Tackle it together.
