People with chronic health conditions often focus on treating their symptoms. When they are relieved of the symptoms, they naturally feel that the condition is disappearing. However, to be completely cured of any condition, the cause must be addressed.
Imagine the following scenario:
A warning light comes on in your new car and before you know it your engine has overheated. You immediately stop driving and have the car towed to a local mechanic. They recommend that you go back to the dealer who sold you the car. After an hour at the dealer, the mechanic explains: “I removed the warning light and closed the opening with tape so that it no longer bothers you.” But the problem isn’t really solved; it’s just hidden! If you continue to drive the car, the engine will likely burn out, which will cost a lot of money to repair.
We can apply this situation to the human body.
Your body is constantly sending you signals to warn you of a deeper health problem that you should not ignore. Instead of addressing these symptoms, many people treat the symptoms. Some people even remove a body part in the hope that the problem will go away once the symptomatic organ or body part is removed. But removing a body part does not indicate why the condition occurred in the first place. That’s like covering up the warning light of a car.
Without a deeper appreciation and recognition of the body as a fully integrated system of body, mind and spirit, we will continue to treat symptoms as the root cause.
Without recognizing and addressing the body’s warning signs, true health and healing will continue to elude us.
