There are different ways to take herbs, but are all methods equal? Here at WishGarden we believe that liquid is the most important way to experience the plant components most effectively. But we don’t just use any liquid: we use a mixture of alcohol, vegetable glycerin and spring water, and they each bring their own unique value to our formulas.
Extraction Medium Trifecta
Water and alcohol are the most traditional liquids used to extract plant compounds and have been used in herbal medicine since the beginning. There is a special synergy between the two. Water is very efficient at removing constituents, just like alcohol. However, alcohol’s first known purpose was to preserve collected herbs, as dried herbs will lose their potency over time. Adding fresh or dried herbs to alcohol preserves their potency and preserves the medicinal compounds in the plant. A beautiful alchemy is created when both liquids are combined with herbs. We get potency, preservation and purity!
Vegetable glycerin also helps remove plant compounds, but more importantly, it extracts the fat-soluble components of plants, which have their own benefits. Another benefit of vegetable glycerin is that it is naturally sweet and helps improve flavors, which often have a strong or unique flavor profile. It also helps to reduce the alcohol content in the final product. Vegetable glycerin allows us to capture the plant as a whole to create a complete, medicinal product.
Absorption, absorption, absorption
Finally, liquid herbal extracts have superior absorption potential. Without bioavailability and absorption, medicinal herbal plants cannot fully provide their healing properties. So why is fluid more bioavailable and absorbable? It’s all because of our complex digestive system. Our digestion process starts in our mouth. We produce enzymes that start breaking down what we ingest, meaning we immediately start digesting and absorbing the liquid extracts. The body does not need to break down the plant cellulose to absorb the medicinal properties of the herbs, so the components enter our bodies easily and with fewer digestive side effects.
