Many women experience small clots occasionally during menstruation and that is completely normal. These are composed of tissues of the uterine lining, blood cells, mucus and proteins. But the frequent passing of large clots during menstruation may be the result of a medical condition that needs to be diagnosed and treated. The first medical reason behind this is uterine fibroids. These are benign (non-cancerous) growths made of muscle and connective tissue in the uterus. Fibroids can cause blood clots in the menstrual blood, along with other symptoms including prolonged periods, pelvic pain, menstrual cramps, intermenstrual bleeding, painful intercourse, back pain, and leg pain.
Another cause may be endometriosis. It refers to the growth of endometrial tissue, which normally lines the lining of the uterus, in areas other than the uterus, such as in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, rectum, intestines and urinary bladder. It can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding with clots, painful menstruation, pelvic pain, painful urination, painful intercourse, pain in the rectum and bleeding from the urinary bladder or rectum at the same time as menstrual bleeding.
Blood clots can also form with uterine polyps (small, soft, fleshy growths that develop in the uterine lining). Blood clots can also occur during heavy bleeding during menopause. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also lead to heavy bleeding with clots. Another reason is adenomysosis (a condition in which endometrial tissue from the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus). Symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding with clots, prolonged menstrual bleeding, painful periods, painful intercourse, bleeding between periods and bloating. Other possible reasons include thyroid disorders, bleeding disorders (such as platelet function disorders and von Willebrand disease, a bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly), and cancer of the uterus or cervix.
Homeopathic treatment
The homeopathic mode of treatment has a great scope in controlling the passing of blood clots during menstrual bleeding. By treating the cause of the blood clots during menstruation, homeopathic medicines provide excellent results. Along with blood clots, any symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, intermenstrual bleeding (bleeding between periods), pain during menstruation and early periods before menstruation can also be well controlled with homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic medicines for the treatment of this condition are made from natural substances and are therefore very safe to use without any toxic side effects. The homeopathic prescription for the treatment of blood clots during menstruation varies from case to case, depending on the cause behind it and characteristic individual symptoms. So any of these medicines should be taken under the supervision of a homeopathic doctor, after a detailed case assessment, and self-medication should be avoided. Some causes of blood clots during menstruation can be quite serious. It is therefore advisable to always get your case assessed by a doctor to find out the reason behind it and appropriate timely treatment. In case of serious causes, it is advised to seek help from the conventional method of treatment as homeopathy has a limitation in treating such cases.
Homeopathic medicines for blood clots during menstrual bleeding
1. Sabina – Top recommended drug
Sabina is the most prominent medicine in homeopathy to treat complaints of blood clots during menstrual bleeding. This medicine is used when menstrual bleeding is partly liquid and partly clotted. The bleeding is quite heavy, bright red and the clots are dark in color. The slightest movement worsens the bleeding. In most cases the blood has a foul odor. Menstruation may last longer than normal. Bleeding is accompanied by pain. The characteristic feature of pain is that it extends from the sacrum (a bone at the bottom of the spine formed by the fusion of five sacral vertebrae) to the pubis (lower abdominal area in front of the pelvis). In cases where this medicine is required, intermenstrual bleeding, which is medically called metrorrhagia, may also occur. Sabina is a top class medicine for treating cases of uterine fibroids.
2. Thlaspi – For heavy, prolonged periods of clotting
Thlaspi is an effective medicine for treating heavy, prolonged periods of blood clots during bleeding. The bleeding is bright red. Menstruations usually last between 8 and 15 days. Periods may also have a tendency to come early. The females that need it have not even recovered from previous periods when the next periods begin. Periods cause exhaustion. Like Sabina, this medicine is also indicated for the treatment of uterine fibroids.
3. China – With swollen abdomen
China is a very useful medicine for controlling clots in menstrual bleeding with abdominal distension. Menstruation comes early when necessary and also occurs with heavy menstruation with dark clots. The menstrual blood is dark. After menstruation, great weakness and trembling occur.

7. Ipecac – When you suffer from nausea and vomiting
Ipecac is a well-indicated medicine for heavy bleeding with blood clots, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. With each attempt to vomit, bleeding increases. A cutting pain around the navel is also present in cases that require it. Pressure is also felt on the uterus. Headache and dizziness may be associated with the above complaints. Menstruation may occur several times a month, with bleeding in large clots. Weakness occurs after menstruation.
8. Cyclamen – For early black clotted periods
This medicine is useful for treating early menstrual bleeding with black clots. The bleeding is heavy and occurs frequently. The bleeding is less when you move around.
