There is something truly liberating when you discover the power of your voice.
Of the nearly 8 billion people on this planet, there is only one you. Your voice is powerfuland it’s yours unique gift in the world – a gift that you can use make a difference in your own life and the people around you. Your voice can take many forms. While this may be your physical voice, it is also what is most unique about you, your interests and your dreams.
In today’s blog we speak with an Indian flute maker Dana Ross about how the flute helped him discover his voice while exploring how the Native American Flute can help you unlock your voice.
The story of Dana Ross
We are thrilled to have Dana’s beautiful Native American Flutes in our room Shop for sound therapy! Dana has been making flutes for about 28 years and draws from his Chickasaw Native American Heritage as inspiration for the instruments he makes.
What first attracted you to the Native American Flute?
“The sound. I first heard the sound in a New Age store in New Jersey in the 90’s.
The staff played a CD of flute music, but had no information about the instrument. About seven or eight years later I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, went to the Cherokee reservation and heard that same sound.
When I heard it, it woke something up inside, you know, it was like that it has a very spiritual sound to it. I turned the corner and a native man was playing the flute. He told me that a local store had some Native American Style Flutes, so I went in there and looked at those flutes for 30 minutes.
That’s what they seemed like holyand I was afraid to touch them. My wife then told me to buy one, but I just stood there looking at it. And this little voice in my head said, “Make one yourself.” So I did.
I learned by trial and error, because I wanted what I made to be truly mine.”
What do you want people to experience when they play your flute?
“Hopefully they will experience what I experienced, which is a liberation of the heart.
The Native American style flute provides a lot of expression in a very uplifting way, for me and spiritually.
There is no more beautiful sound than the human voice singing. But I don’t have that voice, so I have to sing through a wooden pipe (by playing the flute)!”
What is it about the flute itself that is unique?
“There are many different instruments, but it seems like the Native American Flute is very compelling to people, especially those who don’t have a musical background.
I understand that almost every culture around the world has some kind of flute and some kind of drum, and that there are very different flute styles from all over the world.
But the Native American Flute has a voice that the others do not have. It is a very warm, spiritual and ancient voice. It is a very old instrument dating back thousands of years.
I’ve been an artist all my life; that’s all I wanted to do, and the flute gave me the opportunity to do that mix my interests in artistry and technologyand it is the only medium with which I have not grown old.”
How does flute making help you express your heritage and culture?
“I have Chickasaw blood in my family, and the Chickasaw Nation was very small, and there’s not a lot of information out there.
I tell people I’ve been making flutes since the 1990s, but recently I realized that my Chickasaw grandfather taught me how to make the flute at the age of ten.
I think it’s been with me all these years, and when I heard the sound of the flute that day in New Jersey, it woke up again.
