Weak urine flow is a common problem, especially in the elderly over 50 years of age. Although it can occur in both men and women, it is more common in men. A weak urine stream indicates that the bladder is not emptying properly. When a person has difficulty initiating or maintaining urine flow, this is called “urinary hesitation” in the medical world. Weak urine flow can have several causes, with benign prostate enlargement (BPH) and urinary stricture (narrowing of the urethra that causes urine to leave the body) being the main causes. Weak urine flow may also be accompanied by other symptoms depending on the cause behind it, such as dribbling after urination, frequent urination, abdominal discomfort, the feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder and pain during urination. If the condition is not properly diagnosed and treated, it can worsen and lead to urinary retention (this means complete inability to urinate). Urinary retention that occurs suddenly is a serious health problem that requires immediate medical attention.
Homeopathic treatment
The homeopathic mode of treatment has a wide scope to manage cases of weak urine flow. Homeopathic medicines aim to correct the underlying cause behind the thin urine flow and provide great relief. These are natural remedies that treat this condition without side effects. In addition to weak urine flow, they can also control any associated symptoms. These drugs are recommended for mild to moderate cases with no additional complications. In case of acute urinary retention, one should immediately seek help from the conventional method of treatment as homeopathy has limitations in treating such critical cases. The homeopathic prescription for weak urine flow varies from case to case, depending on the cause and characteristic individual symptoms. One should therefore take homeopathic medicines under the supervision of a homeopathic doctor and avoid self-medication.
Homeopathic medicines for weak urine flow
1. Clematis – best remedy for weak flow and constriction
Clematis is a highly recommended medicine for treating cases of weak urine flow due to a urethral stricture. Persons requiring this medicine should make an effort to stimulate the flow of urine. Urine flows in a thin stream and quite slowly. Urine may start and stop several times until urination is completed. After finishing urination, dribbling (drop by drop) of urine occurs. There is a frequent desire to urinate. The urine that is passed is scanty. A burning sensation can sometimes be felt during urination.
2. Chimaphila – For weak current of enlarged prostate
Chimaphila is an effective drug against weak urine flow due to prostate enlargement. Those who need it have difficulty starting the urine flow, and the urine flow is thin as a thread. They have to make a lot of effort to urinate. They may need to stand with feet apart and bend forward and strain to empty the bladder. A burning sensation may be felt when urinating. This medicine is also recommended for urinary problems and prostate enlargement.
3. Cantharis – For thin flow due to stricture, urinary infections
This medicine is useful in controlling weak urine flow in cases of urethral stricture and urinary tract infections. Pain or burning sensation during urination is prominent. A burning sensation/pain can occur both before and after urination. The urge to urinate is also quite common and sometimes almost constant. There is an urge to urinate even when there is little urine in the bladder.
4. Thuja – For both weak and split urine streams
Thuja works well in cases where urine flow is poor and bifurcated (meaning urine flow goes in two directions instead of one). You need to urinate more often, especially at night. The urge to urinate can also be sudden. In some cases, the urine drips and has a foul odor.
5. Sarsaparilla – Along with pain towards the end of urination
This medicine is useful for individuals with weak urine flow and severe pain towards the end of urination. The urine excreted is scanty. It may contain flakes or sand particles. This medicine is also a great help in cases of kidney stones.
6. Merc Sol – With frequent and urgent urination
Merc Sol is of great help in cases where the urine flow is small and weak, along with increased frequency and urgency. Only a small amount of urine passes at a time. There may be an urge to urinate every hour. A burning sensation in the urethra can occur especially at the beginning of urination. Sometimes the urine flows drop by drop and may contain mucus and blood. The bladder area may be painful when touched.
7. Aluminum Oxide – for frequent and poor urine flow in the elderly
This medicine is very useful for the elderly who have frequent urination and poor urine flow. They also have difficulty initiating urine. They have to make an effort to urinate. A small amount of urine is excreted. You feel burning and aching pain while urinating. There is always a feeling as if some drops of urine remained in the urethra that could not be excreted.
8. Hepar Sulph – With a sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder
Hepar Sulph is suitable for people with poor urine flow and the feeling as if the bladder has not been completely emptied. The urine flow does not start immediately when there is an urge to urinate; one must wait until urination begins. After urinating, one feels that some urine has remained in the bladder. A burning or stabbing pain may be felt in the bladder.
Causes of weak urine flow
1. Benign Prostatic Enlargement (BPH) – It refers to the enlargement of the prostate gland that surrounds the first part of the urethra in men. When the prostate enlarges, it puts pressure on the urethra, blocking the flow of urine. It results in symptoms such as frequent urge to urinate, difficulty urinating, weak urine flow and dribbling after urination.
2. Urinary stricture – It refers to the narrowing of the urethra (a tube through which urine leaves the body). It is common in men compared to women. It occurs when scar tissue develops in the urethra after an injury to the urethra, use of a catheter, recurrent urinary tract infections, certain urinary tract surgeries such as those done for stone removal, or prostate surgery. The first complaint it causes is a weak urine flow. Other resulting complaints include split urine flow, frequent and urgent need to urinate and interrupted urination.
3. Underactive Bladder – A condition in which the bladder has less force to contract and results in slow emptying of the bladder. Symptoms include poor urine flow, having to wait for urine flow to start, straining to urinate, interrupted urine flow, longer time to urinate, a decreased sense of bladder fullness, and a feeling as if the bladder is not full. has been emptied.
4. Bladder outlet obstruction – This indicates a blockage at the base of the bladder. It causes symptoms such as a constant feeling of fullness of the bladder, abdominal pain, slow urine flow, frequent urination and difficulty urinating.
5. Kidney stones and any tumor blocking the urinary bladder or urethra
6. Nerve damage (for example from diabetes) and nervous system disorders such as multiple sclerosis (an autoimmune disease in which there is damage to the myelin sheath that protects the nerves) and Parkinson’s disease (a nervous system disorder that begins with shaking hands in rest followed by muscle stiffness, stooped posture, changes in speech, disturbed balance and reduced arm swing).
7. Infections such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland causing pain/burning when urinating, increased frequency and urge to urinate, weak urine flow, pain in the pelvic area, genitals or groin and painful ejaculation) and UTI (urinary tract infection causing pain/ burning sensation when urinating, increased urination, strong odor of urine and in case of upper urinary tract infection fever, chills, pain in the upper back and sides and nausea and vomiting.)
8. Use of certain medications (e.g., nasal decongestants, allergy medications, some cold medications, and antidepressants) and psychological reasons.
