An enlarged prostate can make going to the toilet a chore for older men. Now, a new international panel of seven leading European and North American urologists reports that high-quality saw palmetto extract is a valid treatment option for men with mild to moderate lower urinary tract symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.
Saw Palmetto extract, also known as lipidsterolic extract Serenoa repens, is commonly available as a natural product food supplement. The team reviewed more than 50 original clinical studies to reach their conclusions.
“Around the world, there is a lack of consensus regarding the effectiveness of saw palmetto extract, resulting in varying recommendations from health organizations around the world,” said study co-author Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a board-certified urologist, in A press release. “The purpose of this expert panel was to contribute to our collective understanding of the science and to generate discussion about the role that a high-quality Saw Palmetto extract can play in men’s health.”
What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate?
As men get older, it is very common for their prostate to become larger. According to the Urology Care Foundation, about half of all men between the ages of 50 and 60 are affected by diabetes enlarged prostate. This statistic jumps to 90 percent of men over the age of 80. Symptoms associated with prostate enlargement include frequent urination, nocturia (numerous trips to the toilet at night), difficulty initiating and maintaining a urine flow, and dribbling after urination.
Saw Palmetto trees are native to the southeastern United States and produce berries. These berries are the most studied natural ingredient when it comes to prostate health, but study authors explain that the biggest problem with saw palmetto supplements today is the wide variety in terms of quality. Many of the Saw Palmetto supplements are available on store shelves in the United States are not of the best caliber.
What is the best option among these supplements?
The panel explains that, according to the latest evidence, high-quality lipidsterolic extracts with a profile defined by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) monograph, such as Flomentum®is likely to be clinically effective.
“Our panel recognized that the literature on the benefit of saw palmetto extract for lower urinary tract symptoms was specific to a high-quality extract used 320 mg daily,” notes lead study author Dr. J. Curtis Nickel op.
The team of urologists explains that Flomentum is the first, and currently only, USP-verified prostate health supplement available to support lower prostate health concerns. urinary tract symptoms while it does not cause any sexual side effects.
“This 2022 evaluation suggests that a high-quality saw palmetto extract may play a positive role in supporting physician care delivery to older men in the United States,” concludes Dr. Leigh Vinocur, a board-certified physician and chief medical officer of Flomentum. Health.
