“Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find…”
– The Gospel of Thomas (Nag Hammadi Library)
When I keep in mind all the problems, misunderstandings, abuses and modifications surrounding ancient texts like the one I just quoted, I still find this sentence very inspiring in its simplicity.
It also summarizes the thinking behind the words I am about to share.
In the emerging field of Sound Healing, there is a particular fascination with the numerical values of vibrational frequencies, normally indicated by the letters “Hz” (Hertz). This name indicates how many times the cycle of a certain vibration occurs in the space of one second. For example, 110 Hz means that the vibration completes 110 cycles in one second.
Sound is a mysterious element; its effects are powerful and far-reaching. The ability of sound to affect the human body both positively and negatively is well known. If in medical science a very high frequency of sound (ultrasound) can be used to cure certain problems, very low frequencies produced by machines (and certain sonic weapons) can cause dizziness and nausea.
The kind of fascination that connects sounds and numbers is very old. In the Western world it dates back at least to the time of Pythagoras, the semi-mythical Greek philosopher.
Pythagoras reportedly had a deep fascination with numbers, which formed the basis of the teaching of his secret school. He is credited with introducing the Western world to the ancient wisdom of musical science, thus sowing the seeds of what would become the harmony theory we know today.
The very rational use of numbers to express musical meaning (and vice versa) has an almost irresistible charm for those who, like me, are so drawn to understanding the mysteries of music.
As Sound Healing becomes more and more popular, we are witnessing the rise of a type of Neopythagoreanism that brings about what I like to call the “quest for the magical frequency.” Every now and then someone claims to have found/received/channeled a specific frequency that activates/heals/transforms this or that. Normally, the discovery is accompanied by the humanitarian urge to create a new product so that the cure can be spread far and wide.
Now the sarcastic tone of this article is deliberately chosen to clarify issues that are often presented with Hierophantic seriousness.
What are we actually doing when we come up with these new ideas? We use the power of our imagination, a tool the mind normally uses to create images that we can use to understand, process, and (yes!) manifest things. I believe that while we struggle with how to navigate good, effective communication, develop emotional intelligence, and the ability to truly understand each other, most of us haven’t even begun to explore subtler areas of our being.
A competent distinction between imagination and intuition is a rare, refined ability.
Imagination is an instrument of the mind. If left without specific tasks, he may continue to fantasize. It is what it does.
When bits of information lie around unused, such as things we have read, things we have heard, things we have dreamed of, or things we have imagined, the imagination can begin to put them together as any artist would instinctively… experiment.
The result of these experiments can easily merge with the flow of our intuition and become indistinguishable from each other. Here comes the revelation! Suddenly we are invested with the precious knowledge of the previously unknown miraculous effects of a specific frequency! Then of course comes the realization, almost a disclaimer, that this is in fact very old knowledge that has recently been rediscovered.
On the other hand, there is no reason why the information coming in this particular way shouldn’t produce something powerful and effective. After all, imagination is what we use to manifest. So it may well be that we create new space for healing by creating healing frequencies. Perhaps that very popular set of specific frequencies can be truly healing if enough people have used them long enough to create a field around them.
As the sentence quoted at the beginning of this text continues:
“If they find that, they will be disturbed. If disturbed, they will amaze and rule over everything.“
– The Gospel of Thomas (Nag Hammadi Library)
We can only observe with an open mind and follow our imagination… Intuition!
