This month we zoom in on the fantastic nettle as our recommended herb. This humble plant deserves a place in the holy halls of the herbs of mother nature.
Found in shady moist areas, often ditches, stinging nettle is abundantly present in many parts of the world. We have many records of the different applications, because it has been used throughout history. There is so much to say about the enormous variety of useful applications and properties that go with this herb; Too much to deal with in a blog.
The name Urtica refers to the small hair that cover the plant that carries formic acid, which is extracted during contact; Hence the name “Sting Nettle”. The antidote for the sting and rash is to rub on the juice of a sheet or stem in the dock family, which is often found in the vicinity of nettle.
Nettle, mooring, rub dock.
Due to the histamine -calibrating connections, Nettle is an excellent supporting herb for seasonal discomfort such as breathing complaints and common allergies. The water -soluble polysaccharides support a healthy immune system. It was used in Roman times for a healthy circulation when the soldiers freeze in North Europe. They would take stems and flag their limbs. It is also used to calm painful and stiff joints.
Nettle is full of vitamins and minerals, including:
- Sulfur to support the immune system
- Zinc for a healthy memory
- Chromium
- Boron for healthy bones
- Silicon to support joints and connective tissue
- Selenium
- Vitamins A, C, D, E, F and P
- Iron to build the blood
- Calcium to support healthy bones, muscles, strengthening hair and nails and calming nerves
As a retired obstetrician, I recommend a cup of nettles and raspberry leaf tea per day to offer calcium, iron and spur minerals to support the uterine tint of a mother and the growth of her baby. It is one of the best sources of calcium you can find. It is magnetized in the blood without being digested.
In England and Germany, nettles were an important source of food during the Second World War, which helped people survive during extreme hardships. Great soup was a basic food. It was also used to make canvas and rope because it is stronger than hemp or flax. Oil was expressed from the seeds to burn in oil lamps.
Cut and dried, offered the hay for cattle and produced more milk. Chickens flourished on nettles in powder form and mixed in their food and they laid more eggs. Forests of nettles, hung in Larders, keeps the flies away. And if you plant it near beehable, it keeps the frogs away.
The juice, rubbed in the thin cracks of a leaking wooden bathtub will coagulate and make it waterproof. Dyes are made of the root and leaf, yellow for the root and green for the leaf. You can even make paper.
