I have just returned from a great trip to Louisiana, enjoying time with people who love Wishgarden herbs as much as me. I met incredibly warm and loving individuals, all of whom like to share the affection they have with me in front of their house. Knowledge of my love for all things, many people suggested that I would visit the “Tree of Life” in the Audubon Park in New Orleans.
This great live oak was breathtaking! I nestled in the trunk and stayed safe and dry while a thunderstorm rolled through. There are estimates that the tree is more than 600 years old, and while I was thinking about the wisdom of a tree that has reached that age, I started to think about other trees that become the elderly of the forest, like it Redwood and Ginkgo trees.
Ginkgo Biloba, or the Maidenhair tree, is considered a real living fossil. Some say that the first hair is the oldest living tree species on the planet and can live for more than 2500 years.
Maidenhair -Boom in the fall
This tree is often used as a good example of the doctrine of signatures, which holds that plants that resemble different parts of the body can be used for that part of the body. For example, the Maidenhair tree is said to support memory and concentration.
If you look at the leaf of the plant, you will notice something called Dichotome Venatie, whereby the veins of the plant constantly branch from each other to the outer edges of the leaf. It also has two hemispheres as the name Bi-Loba suggests. That, and the fact that the gingko -nut is very similar to a real miniature brain, explains why this plant has been seen as “brain food” for centuries. Gingko is also an antioxidant and supports a healthy circulation and vision and can help to mitigate the symptoms of interior disorders.
Gingko -leaf and note
Trees such as the live oaks mentioned above must have a number of pretty amazing skills to endure the changes through time, and the gingko tree certainly has a long service life in its limbs. It is one of the few trees that can survive are planted in a very small space with limited soil access, there are few insects that harass it, it has no known disease problems and it is very resistant to pollution.
Today gingko -trees lives that were the only plant life that Hiroshima survived; They were heavily burned and damaged, but flourished again after just a few years. It is clear that these older trees have secrets that we all would like to know, and I am glad they pass us on a little of their wisdom in the form of herbal medicine.
