Facial redness and facial flushing may occasionally occur due to overheating; after exercising; during an intense emotion such as anger, fear, stress; eating hot, spicy foods or drinking alcohol. Redness of the face and flushing may also be observed with fever. However, if it occurs frequently, it may be due to an associated medical condition that needs to be diagnosed and treated. The first of these is acne rosacea. It is a skin condition in which the face becomes flushed and reddened, with enlarged blood vessels and acne (pimples), sometimes filled with pus (pustules). Another reason could be eczema/dermatitis on the face. It indicates inflamed skin with red, dry, itchy skin that may be accompanied by flaking or small fluid-filled bumps. In facial eczema, the cheeks are the most affected area. Another cause is lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the body’s healthy tissues and organs are attacked and inflamed, damaged by the body’s immune cells. It causes a butterfly-shaped rash on the face that spreads over the cheeks and bridge of the nose. In addition, it can cause a rash on any body area and other symptoms such as joint pain, fever, fatigue, headache, chest pain, dry eyes and memory loss. Other causes include erythema infectiosum, erysipelas and scarlet fever. Erythema infectiosum is also known as the fifth disease that occurs in childhood and causes a red-colored rash on the cheeks of the child. This is the result of an infection with a virus called parvovirus B19.

Erysipelas is a skin infection that affects the upper layers of the skin and is caused by a bacterial infection. Scarlet fever is a bacterial infection that can occur in some cases of strep throat (sore throat caused by an infection with a bacteria called group A streptococci). In this fever, a bright red rash appears on the body, starting from the face or neck, and then spreads to other parts of the body. In addition to the above, another cause is Cushing’s syndrome. In this syndrome, the hormone cortisol is produced in excessive amounts, which can cause redness of the skin among other symptoms such as weight gain, round/moon-shaped face, excessive fat around the neck, acne and thin skin with a tendency to bruise easily . . Facial flushing can also occur in women during menopause (the permanent cessation of the menstrual cycle in women between the ages of 40 and 50). Sometimes the use of certain medications can lead to facial redness, such as medications to treat high cholesterol, diabetes, and chemotherapy. Facial flushing may be accompanied by other signs and symptoms such as heat, dryness, itching, swelling and pain in the face depending on the reason associated with it.
