Interview With Lydia Clark: A Sound Healer’s Journey
Since graduating, Lydia has enjoyed a rewarding and thriving career in sound healing, providing 1-2-1 sound healing sessions for her ever-growing community.
Tell us about your journey with sound healing!
I have sung/toned all my life. Since before I could speak full sentences, everything has been a song.
Early in my music education, I realized how powerful music was for all sentient beings. We can use it to express joy, love, anger, to alleviate depression, and raise us to the highest of places mentally, physically, and spiritually. Sound provided an impetus for me as a musician all my life. The subtleties of sound from percussion instruments were also prominent early on for me. Participating in drumming and singing, free-form dancing, and jamming (musically) was part of the picture, and continued my experience, including a broader perspective of sound/music.
My first experience with sound healing was with Tibetan bowls, at my local Buddhist center. The draw of dropping into a meditative state was so strong. It immediately transported me into my deeper self and introduced me to other planes of being. I felt as if I could remain in that state for eternity! There were no instructional institutions at that time, as it was all experiential. But the seeds were planted, and my intrigue began.
Around 2010, I began composing a lot of positive thought music. At that time, I attended several performances that included instruments like the shruti box, harmonium, handpans, the Native flute, and Tibetan bowls. It influenced much of my writing and thinking, and I began to look at ways to incorporate these instruments and sounds into my music.
What drew you to study sound healing at The Sound Healing Academy?
In 2022, after enjoying some crystal singing bowl videos online, I looked at sound healing as a vocation and was thrilled to discover The Sound Healing Academy!
After looking at several sites, the academy appeared to have more of what I sought. It was much more in-depth than any other programs offered, which proved to be true, and I really enjoyed it!
I learned so much from the courses, not only about sound healing, but about myself. The entire process was so positive, fulfilling, and rewarding. I loved every minute of my sound therapy education journey!
The information was easy to understand and accessible, the videos were informative, and the charts and additional curriculum materials were well-produced and varied. I am confident that I can be a great sound healing practitioner, while knowing there is still a vast amount of knowledge to acquire!
Did you take our online courses, attend workshops, or do a combination of both? How did these formats shape your learning experience?
I took the online sound healing courses! At the time, no live workshops were available (still coming off COVID). Online was great, and the one thing that helped the most for me was that my tutor was local, allowing me to interact with her one-on-one in person.
Being able to experience techniques and discussions in that forum was fabulous, and I look forward to attending some of the in-person training workshops as the opportunity presents itself!
How has sound healing impacted your life personally and professionally?
I have definitely become a more loving, patient, compassionate person in all that I do!
All my friends and family have remarked about this part of my personality and behavior. It has opened me to the reality that I am here to be of service – to heal, connect, and seek balance in everything.
Professionally, it has added another musical dimension to my teaching and performance, another source of income, and an expanded part of my career and life path!
Have you noticed any significant transformations in the lives of others through your sound healing practice?
Many of the people I have treated individually have had positive changes physically, mentally and spiritually.
My sound healing sessions have given many people a sense of connection, release and balance. In particular, my daughter had a cancerous growth that, when the doctors went to remove the tumor, they found it to be dissolving and no cancer present.
For myself, I released and eliminated a trigger finger issue, which was creating a disability, and now it is completely gone! I’ve also helped a client to release old trauma and fears that were keeping her stuck.
Are you currently practicing sound therapy as a profession? If so, can you tell us more about your work and what it involves?
Yes, I am currently practicing as a sound therapy practitioner!
I have an individual private practice currently out of my home, where I provide individual sound healing sessions for clients, family and friends, but I am working towards having an actual business location!
What advice would you give to someone considering starting their own journey into sound healing?
Gather as much information as possible before choosing an education program!
Many minimal programs are offered, and don’t provide enough information/instruction, and have no real practical application. Know what sound healing instrument(s) you may wish to use, choose, and buy wisely. Many instruments are not high quality, and you can spend a lot of money buying something that won’t perform well.
Participate with other students, join sound healing forums or groups, and have open discussions where you ask plenty of questions. You can learn something new daily for the rest of your life – it is a never-ending quest for knowledge and continues evolving!
After completing your studies, how do you continue to grow and develop your skills as a sound healing practitioner?
I plan to attend in-person workshops and some more online sound healing courses! Participating in online forums/discussion groups, creating a group locally that could meet in person and explore techniques, more instruments, new developments, etc.
And of course, continue reading the many available books (or other media) about sound therapy. Of course, continuing to provide 1-2-1 sound therapy, and teaching others – whether it’s how to play a single bowl, tone, or understanding more of the in-depth musicality of sound healing!
