Whole wheat soda bread is actually a pretty healthy bread when made authentically. It is a good source of whole grains, as well as fiber and some protein. If the word “bread” betrays you – fear not, friends. No experience with kneading, rising or bread baking is necessary.

Enjoy it fresh from the oven, whether as a delicious breakfast toast, a hearty side dish for soup or as a nutritious snack with your favorite topping. Healthy, easy and irresistibly tasty: this brown soda bread will quickly become an indispensable part of your kitchen!

This simple recipe for whole wheat soda rolls is made with baking soda instead of yeast, so you can enjoy warm bread with just a few minutes of prep and less than an hour in the oven. This healthy whole wheat Irish Soda Bread recipe is very easy to make and a delicious addition to your St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

How do you make whole wheat soda bread?

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup flaxseed meal (linseed meal)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup millet flour (millet flour)
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds, ground
  • 2 tablespoons wheat gluten
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/4 cup low-fat buttermilk or low-fat milk
  • 2 egg whites

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F. Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the milk and egg white. Mix well. Add the milk and egg mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until well moistened.
  3. Lightly grease the bottom of a 5-by-8-inch loaf pan. Place the dough in the pan. Using a sharp knife, make a slit in the dough lengthwise, about 1/4 inch deep.
  4. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes. To test doneness, insert a skewer or knife into the center of the bread. It should come out clean. Let it cool thoroughly on a rack before cutting.

Note: You can add other grains/seeds to the flour. I love adding sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Remember, this bread is supposed to look rustic.
