Wild Yam: The Strength of a Woman

When I think of Wild Yam, I often think of women. It is commonly found in herbal medicines that nourish and revive the female reproductive system. But I also think of women because of the beauty and wildness of Wild Yam. Wild Yam is a winding vine that explores and cuddles her nearby plant creatures. She may look delicate from above, but beneath the surface you will find strength and density.

Botanical description

Wild yam vine

Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa) is polymorphic, meaning it can vary in appearance but can be the same species. Its characteristics can vary depending on habitat and geography, even within a single plant. Above ground you will usually find a variant of a vine plant with broad and bright green leaves. Below the surface you will find a large, dense rhizome that resembles a sweet potato. That’s the yam. Although it would not be very tasty to eat, this rhizome contains many beneficial plant compounds that are used to support the uterus, regular menstrual cycles, skin, digestion and inflammation modulation.

Wild Yam and Hormones

Wild Yam is most popular for its affinity with the feminine system. It does not necessarily contain ‘hormone precursors’ because humans do not have the enzymes needed to convert the plant’s steroidal saponins into sex hormones. But Wild Yam still affects our hormonal system. It supports our reproductive/endocrine system by supporting healthy inflammation and the hormone pathways. I like to think of it as clearing the traffic on the roads so that the hormones can drive and move faster and with more ease. It can also help strengthen the uterus, which can support us during our cycles, especially for women who are prone to heavier cramps.

Many of WishGarden’s women’s formulas contain Wild Yam. Cramp Release Menses Soother, Hot Flash Tamer Daily Regulator, Cycle Vitality 2 Luteal Phase Progesteronic Support, Cycle Changes Peri/Menopause and Cycle Harmony Hormone Support all contain Wild Yam, proving this plant has the power to help a woman at any stage of life to support. .

Lesser known but great benefits

Another characteristic of Wild Yam that reflects women is the ability to multitask. I’m always amazed at the many different ways medicinal plants can support our bodies!

Wild Yam supports digestion in several ways. It can help soothe nausea, calm nervous irritability and reduce spasms. This may be well suited for people with an overactive digestive system that is thrown out of balance by the nerves.

Muscles that may be inflamed, swollen or sore can be soothed by the soothing and cooling effects of Wild Yam. In addition to its inflammation modulating properties, it is a great addition to muscle and joint treatments. WishGarden uses it in our Exercise & Revive Recovery Aid formula to speed recovery after a strenuous walk or workout. It’s also in our Deep Recovery Muscular-Skeletal formula to combat persistent muscle and joint discomfort.

This herb can also be useful for the skin – especially for skin problems that cause redness or irritation – due to its cooling and soothing properties.

Ways to Use Wild Yams

Wild Yam is often used in a tincture decoction or in dried capsule form and is often included in formulas with other supporting herbs. It is also found in body creams that contain progesterone, which can support a woman’s cycle and is also soothing to the skin’s surface. Wild Yam is found in Chinese medicine teas that support kidney detoxification and hormone balance and have an earthy, earthy flavor.
