Chest congestion refers to the accumulation of excessive mucus in the bronchi (airways leading from the trachea to the lungs) and lungs. This is the result of an overproduction of mucus when the mucous membranes become irritated and inflamed due to a viral or bacterial infection. The production of excessive mucus is the body’s way of expelling the infectious agent from the body. In some cases, chest congestion can be accompanied by breathing difficulties. Other accompanying symptoms include coughing, coughing up phlegm (which varies in color and may have an unpleasant odor), chest pain, wheezing (a whistling sound from the chest that occurs during breathing, usually deep breathing), tightness in the the chest, fatigue and fever.

Chest congestion with difficulty breathing can be due to several reasons. The first of these is colds and flu. Flu and colds are respiratory infections usually caused by viruses. Flu occurs when someone is infected with the influenza virus. Colds are caused by various viral infections, such as the rhinovirus and the parainfluenza virus.

Other causes of chest congestion include asthma and bronchitis. Asthma refers to a breathing condition in which there is narrowing of the airways, along with swelling and excessive production of mucus. It results in breathing difficulties, wheezing from the chest and coughing. Bronchitis refers to an inflamed lining of the bronchi that carry air to and from the lungs. Chest congestion with breathing difficulties can also be the result of allergies such as dust allergy and pollen allergy.

Another reason may be pneumonia (the inflamed air sacs of the lungs with fluid buildup due to an infection). Other reasons include emphysema (a condition resulting from damage to the air sacs of the lungs) and bronchiectasis (permanent widening and thickening of the bronchial tubes of the lungs that allows bacteria and mucus to build up in the lungs). In addition to respiratory conditions, heart problems can also lead to chest congestion and breathing difficulties. For example, in some cases, chest congestion and difficult breathing can be symptoms of a heart attack, which is a medical emergency that requires urgent medical attention through conventional treatment.
