This Exfoliating Lip Scrub cleanses your lips so they look and feel healthier than ever. The DIY lip scrub recipe is easy to make at home, with just a few ingredients you may already have in your pantry.
The great thing about homemade lip scrub is that it’s one of the most accessible skin care products you can make at home. It is affordable and very effective. In addition, it smoothes your lips by removing dead skin cells and stimulating blood circulation. Depending on the ingredients, it also has additional benefits.
But why bother making a lip scrub?
Lips are not good at retaining moisture, so they often become dry.
If you have chapped lips and always use lip balm without much relief, try a homemade lip scrub that might do the trick.
What is an exfoliating homemade lip scrub?
This homemade lip scrub recipe is made from natural ingredients. This helps remove dead skin cells and make your lips smoother. You can make it with everyday items you find at home. A basic recipe may contain sugar, honey and coconut oil. The sugar is a gentle exfoliant, the honey helps hydrate and the coconut oil provides extra nourishment. Other variations can include ingredients such as cinnamon turmeric, beet powder or vanilla for extra fragrance.
Why should you use it in your lip care routine?
One lip balm is not enough if you want your lips to be healthy, hydrated and nourished. An ideal lip care routine consists of several steps.
First, regular hydration is essential, so drinking enough water supports the overall health of the skin, including your lips. Second, using a lip balm with SPF protection helps protect your lips from sun damage. Plus, it’s important to exfoliate your lips, a step that many of us forget to do! Finally, practicing good habits such as avoiding excessive lip licking will leave your lips feeling luxuriously soft.
Why Make a Sugar Honey Lip Scrub at Home?
- Control over ingredients: While expensive lip scrubs from stores often use additives and chemicals, this natural lip scrub is safe for use on sensitive skin or those with allergies.

- make a thoughtful gift.
Exfoliating lip scrub homemade ingredients
Honey
Honey is a popular humectant that is a moisturizer with the ability to retain moisture while preserving the sugar scrub. Combine it with sugar and almond oil for this homemade lip scrub.
Sugar
Granulated sugar is a gentle exfoliant that removes dry skin and reveals new skin cells. When applied in a smooth circular motion, it also increases blood circulation. You can use any sugar available; the smallest granules are suitable for sensitive skin.
Less abrasive Brown sugar with the tiniest granules is suitable for sensitive skin.
While Turbinaro sugar is the least processed with the most minerals and large grains and is suitable for normal skin types. Try different types to see what works best for you.
In this honey scrub I mainly used white sugar to emphasize the color difference. Otherwise, white processed sugar is highly processed and contains much less glycolic acid than its unrefined raw counterparts. Glycolic acid is the key ingredient that supports cell renewal and generates younger cells.
A similar effect has also been found with finely ground coffee grounds.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil plays a dual role in this recipe. It acts as a natural exfoliant and moisturizer and helps remove dead skin cells while keeping lips hydrated. Its nourishing properties and mild nature make it suitable for gentle yet effective lip care.
Vitamin E – optional
It has antioxidant properties that help protect and hydrate the lips, promoting a smoother texture.
Essential oils – optional
Although essential oils can be used in lip scrubs to add fragrance and other benefits, it is crucial to use them sparingly. Also use oils that are safe for topical application to the lips, such as lavender, vanillaor peppermint essential oil.
Turmeric powder
Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help soothe and rejuvenate the lips. However, use it in moderation as the intense yellow can temporarily stain the lips.
Beetroot powder
Beetroot powder is a unique and natural addition to lip scrubs. It gives a natural reddish or pinkish tint to the scrub, and some people think it has subtle lip coloring properties.
DIY lip scrub recipe
First step: Mix sugar and coconut oil
Mix the sugar and coconut oil in a small bowl. Adjust the ratio if you prefer a coarser or smoother texture.
Second step: add honey
Add honey to the mixture and stir well until all ingredients are combined.
Third step: Add essential oils and vitamin E
If desired, add two drops of vitamin E and essential oils if using. Mix well.
Fourth step: adding colors
You’re done, unless you want to add some colors and extra benefits to your homemade lip scrub. I divided the contents into three small bowls, leaving one pure white, with no colors. Then I added 1 teaspoon of turmeric to the second bowl, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and a teaspoon of beetroot powder for a pink tint to the third bowl. Once mixed, transfer each lip scrub into the sterilized lip balm tint.
How do you use a lip scrub for dry lips?
Make sure your lips are free of makeup or lipstick before you start. Always use clean and dry hands when removing the lip scrub from the jar to prevent contamination!
Scoop out a small amount of lip scrub with a spoon or cosmetic spatula and apply lip balm to lips with a toothbrush or your finger. Gently scrub lips in circular motions for 30-60 seconds to remove dead skin cells.
The sugar granules can make your skin feel sticky, so rinse your skin thoroughly with warm water after exfoliating.
Then apply a moisturizing, moist lip balm or lip mask, as your lips may feel a bit sensitive after using the scrub.
Exfoliation in your skin care can help you maintain soft, healthy, and smooth lips.
However, apply the lip scrub once or twice a week, which is enough to remove dry skin and maintain soft and supple lips.
