Coffee Substitutes for Pregnancy

Let’s face it: there’s no real substitute for coffee, but desperate times call for creative measures! On the other hand, it’s a good time to consider replacements. An increase in health consciousness has brought endless possibilities and new ways of doing things. Not surprisingly, there are many herbs that help reduce coffee cravings and make for delicious and health-supporting drinks.

Options for expectant mothers

It’s hard to find a plant that tastes like coffee. Coffee has its own unique flavors and aromas. But there are certain characteristics that can be imitated in the hopes of satisfying a desire or providing a similar benefit. Ultimately, we want something that is dark in color, rich and earthy in flavor, and supports mental and physical energy.

Here are some satisfying and pregnancy-safe alternatives:

Roasted dandelion tea: It is dark in color, earthy in taste and packed with supporting nutrients for mother and baby. The best part is that cream and honey go very well with the aromas and flavors of this tea, making the taste quite similar to coffee. Dandelion supports optimal liver function, a healthy digestive tract and urinary tract. Although there is no caffeine in dandelion, it can still help us feel vital. When the liver is healthy, there will be fewer toxins in our body, helping us feel our best.

Cocoa latte: Never underestimate a cup of ‘hot chocolate’. It’s satisfying, earthy, and only as sweet as you make it. You can actually brew cocoa beans the same way you brew coffee beans. Cocoa is rich in free radical scavengers and helps protect the body against oxidative stress. It also supports the production of oxytocin, so we feel good and energetic without a caffeine buzz. Plus, it works well with all flavors that enhance coffee.

Peppermint tea: This flavor certainly doesn’t mimic coffee, but it is a satisfying and supportive tea for pregnant mothers. It helps soothe the digestive complaints that often accompany carrying, and it helps cool the body and refresh the mind. It has an uplifting quality, making it a great pick-me-up. You can also add oat milk and honey to soften the peppermint flavors and add some sweetness.

Although these herbs are safe to use during pregnancy, it is always a good idea to check with your health or birth doctor if you are adding herbs and supplements to your regimen.
