Meditation quotes from masters can be powerful tools for contemplation. In ancient meditation traditions, the masters passed on the essential advice of their system as ‘marrow’ instructions. These were easy to remember and contained the master’s concise instructions. Sometimes students would simply meditate on these essential core instructions for years until full realization arrived.

In today’s world of social media, we consume dozens of memes and quotes every day as we scroll through our news feeds. However, fully understanding the meaning of just one of these quotes and embodying it would bring about a remarkable transformation in a person’s being. That’s how powerful these pointing instructions can be.

Read carefully and reflect on each meditation quote below and take the time to fully absorb the wisdom it contains:

1) “By breathing in I calm the body and mind. I exhale and smile. As I dwell in the present moment, I know that this is the only moment.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh

2) “All it takes to awaken to yourself as the radiant emptiness of the mind is to stop looking for something more, better or different, and turn your attention inward to the awake stillness that you are.” ~ Adyashanti

3) “When you have mastered meditation, the mind is steadfast, like the flame of a lamp in a windless place.” ~ Krishna

4) The mental suffering you create is always a form of non-acceptance, a form of unconscious resistance to what is. At the level of thinking, resistance is a form of judgment. The intensity of suffering depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment.” ~ Eckhart Tolle

5) “When your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything. In the mind of the beginner there are many possibilities, in the mind of the expert there are few.”
~Shunryu Suzuki

6) “To be free from bondage, the wise person must distinguish between the Self and the ego-self. Only thereby will you become full of joy and recognize the Self as Pure Being, Consciousness and Bliss.”
~Adi Shankara

7) “The ultimate meditation is: surrender to reality. The more you fight, the more you conflict with it, the more you will be a loser. With deep surrender the ego disappears. And when the ego is not there, for the first time you become aware of what has always been there.”
~Osho

8) “Learn to live without worrying about yourself. For this you must know your own true being as unyielding, fearless and always victorious. Once you know with absolute certainty that nothing can disturb you more than your own imagination, you will begin to ignore your desires and fears, concepts and ideas, and live only by the truth.
~Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

9) “Integrated meditation practice is like a healthy diet that is essential for maintaining your vitality and resistance to diseases. Likewise, a balanced meditative practice in the course of a socially engaged way of life
boosts your psychological immune system, so you are less vulnerable to all kinds of mental imbalances.”
~Alan Wallace

10) “If a past thought has ceased and a future thought has not yet arisen, in that gap, between them, there is no consciousness of the present moment; fresh, virginal, unchanged by even a hair’s breadth of a concept, a radiant, naked consciousness? Well, that’s what peaceful consciousness is, of course. ”
~Sogyal Rinpoche

11) ‘The ultimate way of Being lies beyond all the contradictory pairs of opposites with which our two-dimensional thinking mind works. Once we succeed in silencing the restless activity of the thinking mind and giving intuition a chance, the pure, all-embracing mind within us will effortlessly manifest itself.”
~ Lama Anagarika Govinda

12) “If your mind is happy, you are happy everywhere. When wisdom awakens within you, you will see the Truth wherever you look. The truth is all there is. It’s like when you learned to read, you could read anywhere.”
~ Ajahn Chah

13) “Follow along with what is happening and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you do.
This is the ultimate.”
~ Chuang Tzu

14) “Meditation means internally realizing the imperturbability of the Essence of Spirit. The reason we are upset is because we get carried away by the circumstances we find ourselves in. Those who are able to keep their minds unperturbed, regardless of the circumstances, have achieved inner peace.”
~ Hui Neng

15) “If you can’t find the truth where you are, where else do you expect to find it?”
~ Dogen

16) “We live in illusion and in the appearance of things. There is a reality. We are that reality. When you understand this, you see that you are nothing, and because you are nothing, you are everything. That’s all.”
~ Kalu Rinpoche ‎

17) “This is the real secret of life: to be fully involved in what you are doing in the here and now.
And instead of calling it work, you realize it is play.”
~Alan Watts

you will recognize that what you are running from does not exist, and that what you are running to is already here.

that it is incredibly vast and connected to all other beings.
~Tenzin Palmo
