“Can I have an STD test done during my period?” is a relevant question. If you’re wondering the same thing, you’re not alone. There are a few reasons why you might think your period could affect your STD test results. There are a few reasons why you may not want to get tested while you have your period. Whatever the reason for your concerns, we are ready to address them.
Can you get tested for STDs during your period? In short, yes. In most cases, your period will not affect your test results or experience. However, there are some cases where you may want to reconsider getting tested for STDs during your period.
Most tests, including those offered by Priority STD, require a blood sample and/or urine sample. For tests that require a blood sample, blood will be taken from your arm, just like any other blood sample test. The fact that you are having your period should not affect the blood taken or your test results. The same applies to tests that require a urine sample.
The case where confusion arises concerns Pap smears for STD testing during your period or if you plan to get tested as part of your routine gynecological exam and Pap smear. At Priority STD we do not use swabs as they can be uncomfortable. If you have yourself tested elsewhere, there is a small chance that heavy bleeding could disrupt the test results. Either way, you may feel more comfortable waiting to test until after your period has ended. For the same reasons, if you want to have a Pap smear (whether you plan to ask your doctor whether you want to be tested for STDs or not), the doctor’s office will probably recommend that you wait until your menstrual cycle has ended.
Another thing to keep in mind if you’re tested for STDs during your period is that your period can cause the pH of your vagina to rise. This increase in pH, combined with other hormonal changes caused by your period, can promote the growth of bacteria in the vagina and cause an increased incidence of bacterial infections. This is something to keep in mind if you are having an STD test in the form of a vaginal swab or pap smear
If you know you are going to have a Pap smear and would rather wait to get tested, you can always reschedule your appointment until after you have finished your period. Keep in mind that sooner is often better when it comes to testing for STDs. You have choices; you can schedule your testing at a testing location that does not use swabs. Then your period does not play a role.
