US Schools Encouraged to Teach Meditation and Emotional Intelligence

What if schools taught children mindfulness, meditation and empathy in addition to traditional academic skills? A new law will allow U.S. schools to fund social and emotional learning (SEL) programs. Mediation and mindfulness are very important in schools to help children relax. Some schools even have one emotional intelligence
test to mentally see where children are currently in the hope of increasing their mental well-being for the future.

Children go to school to learn to read, write, think and reason. But is that enough for success in future jobs and in life? Many education experts
think that might not be enough.

– and colleagues introduced the Academic, Social and Emotional Learning Act.

Ryan’s comments from yesterday press release
:

“These programs are scientifically proven to help students increase their skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, responsible decision making and relationship building – these are the skills that will lay the foundation for students to perform better academically and throughout Their whole life.”

Legislation supports training teachers in SEL to help youth cope with social problems (stress, bullying, drug use), and studies are beginning to show that SEL programming can increase academic potential.

“Self-awareness and meditation – by focusing our attention on our inner world of thoughts and feelings – allow us to master ourselves,” says Daniel Goleman, bestselling author of Emotional Intelligence and Focus. wrote
recently on the topic of why emotional literacy should be taught in schools.

An inner focus allows us to understand and interact with our inner world, even when it is shaken by disturbing feelings. This is a life skill that keeps us on track over the years and helps children become better students.
