Rise & Energize: An Herbal Approach to Daily Energy

As the days get shorter, we sometimes notice that our metabolism shifts into lower gear. In winter the days get darker earlier and our biological clock wants us to stay in bed and rest longer. Let’s be honest though: not everyone has the luxury of sleeping in and getting our full night’s sleep, which is why we may feel a little tired in the morning or off our game.

In today’s world, the early bird certainly gets the worm. When it’s time to Rise and Shine, we want to shine all day long! And one way to do that is by harnessing the power of our herbal allies.

What is energy?

According to Britannica, “Energy is the ability to do work. It can exist in potential, kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear, or other forms.” In other words, energy moves, but it can neither be created nor destroyed. It is a biological or organic function.

When we talk about the lack of energy in our body, it is understood that we are not able to move in time or achieve our goals. ATP – or adenosine triphosphate – is the energy source we use at the cellular level. It is the most important molecule for storing and transferring energy in our cells, and that is what we mean when we talk about our mental and physical energy levels.

Which herbs support energy?

Schisandra Yerba Mate and Maca Herbs

It is important to remember that herbs work in the building blocks of our bodily functions. Herbs do not necessarily work directly on systems. For example, Schisandra, or the ‘berry of five flavors’, supports a healthy circulatory system by working in our blood and removing free radicals with its high content of vitamins C, E and minerals. In response to healthy circulation, our body’s metabolic response can improve. Schisandrab berry strongly supports healthy, productive stress responses by balancing or modulating endocrine functions. Moreover, it is a wonderful adaptogenic herb with nourishing properties.

Yerba Mate is a traditional South American herb that supports energy levels without the jittery side effects of caffeine. It targets short-term mental and physical energy levels and has similar plant properties to coffee. This bitter herb is also known to aid digestion! You’ve probably seen this herb in ready-to-drink energy drinks; however, it is now also making its debut in medicinal herbal formulas.

Maca is another adaptogenic herb that supports healthy stress responses. This herb has supported the vitality of the Peruvian people for thousands of years. Its stellar reputation quickly caught on in our modern world as it supports healthy energy levels while nourishing the adrenal glands.

What can I use for energy besides coffee?

What about coffee? Coffee is the oldest trick in the book. It increases our energy levels quickly. However, it is not suitable for everyone and it should not be used all day long. The plant compound found in coffee, called caffeic acid, is available in different strengths. Coffee contains the highest, most potent amounts and, if not used in moderation, can cause an overstimulation response in our bodies. It can even cause adrenal burnout and lower cortisol levels.

Herbal formulas can increase vitality without causing harm. As I mentioned earlier, adaptogenic herbs help nourish systems, rather than overstimulating basic body functions.

WishGarden Herbs Rise and Shine Daily energy boost

WishGarden’s new Rise & Shine Daily Energy Boost is formulated with innovative herbs such as Yerba Mate and nourishing Milky Oats, which contain the essential nutrient magnesium. Herbal adaptogens help you roll with the punches and stay stable. Known for its sustaining strength and endurance, maca root is called “the food of the gods” in its native Peru. Schisandra is a traditional Chinese long-lived berry that supports the production of ‘feel good’ hormones – your glow! Yerba Mate wakes the mind like coffee, but without the jittery side effects. Soothe mental turbulence and sharpen your senses with Milky Oats and Gotu Kola.

Please note: It is always important to consult your doctor before using herbal formulas as every body has metabolic differences.

Finally, we are all responsible for our own healthy metabolism. Eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water will always be the most important therapeutic tools to increase energy and reduce stress. After all, you are what you eat!
