Sweet: The Power of the Spleen/Stomach and Liver

Almost everyone likes a sweet every now and then. But some people crave sugar. Why? Like a sore back or ringing in the ears, cravings are messages your body sends to help you understand what’s happening on an energetic level.

We are now in the season of late summer when the spleen/gastric organ system is on high alert. This pair is our body’s “energy generator” that helps you collect Qi from the food you eat. The body uses this Qi to complete all its daily activities. Energetically, the spleen/stomach and the liver must support each other for good digestion. The liver is our ‘go with the flow’ organ. All women’s health problems are directly or indirectly related to liver function. A properly functioning liver will flow smoothly, which translates into both physical and emotional flexibility, and a smoothly flowing digestive system. However, the liver has the most difficult job of all: processing stress, anxiety and frustration.

To relieve stress, the liver sends messages. It tells the body to eat sweet foods. This soothes the liver and helps the body release stress. If your stress continues to increase, the body does not have the opportunity to change.

Liver function helps the spleen/stomach and digestive system function properly. If the liver doesn’t reach its potential, how can it deliver on its promise? If the liver cannot help the spleen/stomach function, all the sweets will get stuck in the stomach. When the digestive system cannot function properly, the sugar continues to turn into fat.

Gaining weight is a symbol of creativity. From one perspective, someone might say, “You’re a good artist. You have created a beautiful body – a beautiful image.” Size is power: big car, big house. A larger body can therefore hold more stress. The body must do this to defend itself. All this becomes the image, the signs of the body.
