The benefits of using autumn olive in jam

I have always believed that seasonal and ancestral eating is essential – not only for our health, but also for the planet. Now I realize that my ancestors did not eat autumn olive berries because they are not native to this region. But for me, ancestral eating isn’t just about sticking to what our ancestors ate; it’s about embracing what grows locally, where we live now. When we eat what is plentiful in our environment, it is better for us and for the world around us.

Autumn olive berries are a perfect example of this. Although they are an invasive species, they are also incredibly nutritious and packed with antioxidants, including lycopenewhat is good for your health. On their own, they have a bright, tart flavor that can be a bit intense, but when you combine them with a little sugar and some warm autumn spices, they transform. The sourness softens to a delicious sweet and sour balance that is perfect for jams and jellies. Plus, it’s very satisfying to take something wild and turn it into a delicious, homemade jam that nourishes both body and mind.
