Over the past month, children all over the country went back to school. Whether they return in person, online, or a combination of both, this year is sure to present challenges unlike any we’ve seen before.
The use of technology, the uncertainty in the world, and the constant changes in routines can make it extremely difficult for children to focus on their schoolwork. Add stressed parents and teachers to the equation and it’s a recipe for discomfort everywhere.
My parent friends have been looking for healthy ways they can support their kids (and themselves) during this crazy time, and of course my first recommendation is to turn to our incredible herbal allies.
One of my favorite things about WishGarden is that they offer a fantastic selection of safe, effective remedies for children, and there are a few that are great for easing the transition back to school. One of my favorites is Genius Juice Jr., which kids can use to improve focus and calm nervous energy. This is essential to be able to navigate the school day with balance and ease.
Genius Juice Jr. is a brilliant formulation that addresses the unique reasons why children may have difficulty concentrating (which is very different from adults). In children, the inability to sit still or pay attention is usually related to overactivity of the nervous system. This can be the result of worry, or the simple fact that children sometimes have way too much energy to sit still. These factors all contribute to the often difficult task of sitting in a classroom or in front of a computer for long periods of time.
Herbs in Genius Juice Jr.:
Milky oat tops: Considered one of our most gentle yet effective nervous system tonics. The milky substance in fresh oats contains powerful chemical compounds that can help soothe frazzled nerves at the time.
Gotu Kola antennas: Considered the best brain-boosting herb in the world. Gotu Kola originates from Sri Lanka and is traditionally drunk as a daily adaptogenic tea. Gotu Kola is fantastic for nourishing and protecting brain health.
Passionflower antennae: Passionflower is generally considered a sleep herb and does not necessarily have a sedative effect. However, it is a nervous system that has a particularly good ability to calm an overactive mind. Think about slowing down the “hamster wheel” so you can focus on what’s important at that moment.
Skullcap antennas: Skullcap is another gentle nervous remedy that is effective in helping calm nervous tension. Skullcap can help quickly bring feelings of calm to an overstimulated body.
Nettle leaf: One of our most nutrient dense plants, nettles are a great source of essential minerals and antioxidants to nourish the body. This dose of herbal nutrition could be just what a child needs for a boost in brain power
Cinnamon bark: Cinnamon, one of our favorite culinary spices, also has incredibly powerful health benefits. It can help calm nervous tension, stimulate brain activity and support blood sugar levels.
Adding Attention Ally Focus Friend (formerly Genius Juice Jr.) to your child’s school day can be a powerful tool to help improve your child’s focus and endurance. Since it can sometimes be difficult to get kids to take herbal tinctures, I’ve created a simple and delicious mocktail that will be both a fun activity for your kids and the “spoonful of sugar that helps…”
Mini Genius Mocktail
(for 1 portion)
Instructions & Ingredients
- Fill a Mason jar halfway with ice
- Add 100 ml organic, unfiltered apple juice
- Add 2 oz of sparkling water
- Add two droppers full of Attention Ally Focus Friend
- Garnish with blueberries, mint and healthier gummy bears this or this ☺
- Or get creative with your kids and let them choose their garnishes.
Note Ally Focus Friend has a mild flavor and will work well in many different types of juice. If your kids don’t like apple juice, try it with another favorite juice, kombucha, or in a smoothie. And remember: always consult a doctor before giving your child any new herbal supplement.
