Everyone needs rest at some point. But many of us just keep going until something forces us to stop. It could be a cold, a backache, or a full-blown flu, but at some point something will send you a message to let you know: enough is enough!
Every time you perform an action you use Qi. Whether you’re munching (on food or an idea), running (running an errand or running a marathon), or spending countless hours in front of your devices, you need Qi to complete your tasks, just like apps on your phone need a charged battery to have.
But in addition to spending Qi, you also gain Qi every time you eat medicinal foods, get a good night’s sleep, and practice Qigong. The goal is to use the Qi you acquire to carry out your daily activities, leaving some left over to take you to a better state of health.
But how many of us listen to our body’s signals? Do we know when to stop? Or do we just keep pushing? After a day, week or – gasp! – month filled with constant, endless movement, the body runs out of Qi in its tank. That’s when you feel like you’re walking on fumes. When you ask your body to do even more, it is forced to draw on its reserves to obtain the Qi it needs to complete the tasks. These reserves form the bank of innate Qi that you received at birth.
