For example, everyone has experienced that when they buy a car, they see the same make, model and color everywhere on the road. That is the Law of Attraction working on a very fundamental level. This basic example is simply your mind being focused on – being satisfied with – your new purchase. So your eyes become alert to see what you are meditating on. Yes, you meditate: you think and feel positively about this object. So you see it everywhere.
The same thing happens when you consciously apply the Law of Attraction. You think of an object or circumstance, and you feel the wonder of it as if it already existed; and pretty soon you start noticing little examples of that object or circumstance. That can grow into the reality of it appearing in your life.
As meditation teacher Alan Wallace says, “…if you could direct your attention as you saw fit, you could actually choose the universe you seem to inhabit.”
The story of physics
Not the Math and Science of Physics – The Story of Physics. Once you understand this, you will understand how to make the Law of Attraction work for you.
The universe is filled with energy: the universal energy field. It is everywhere, in everything; and exists even in the emptiest parts of space. Energy is always vibrating, undulating, flowing, spiraling and spinning in eddies. These vortices naturally form double helices (the shape of DNA). The forces in the double helix draw energy through the center and concentrate it. Concentrated energy becomes matter. That’s simplistic, but it’s a story about explanation, not science.
Now let’s shift the perspective from the fantastically large to the unimaginably small. Scientists have discovered and identified the smallest particles, the so-called quantum particles. These are the particles that make up the protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom. Quantum particles are so small that if they were the size of your index finger, the energy field around them would extend all the way beyond Jupiter. It takes three of these particles to make a proton, and three more to make a neutron. These things are small!
But more importantly, they take up enormous amounts of space thanks to their energy fields, which contain no matter except for the tiny particle. That’s a lot of space. You’ve probably heard your teacher talk about how an atom is mostly made up of space. When we touch a table or chair, it is actually just the energy fields opposing each other. They will tell you that we don’t really exist because we are more than 99.99999% space. But I want you to realize that all that space is filled with energy.
Everything is energy
The entire universe is full of energy, including the energy that creates you. And the energy is always moving. You expected certainty? There is no certainty. Everything is constantly changing.
Which brings us to meditation. We do meditation to help us see that there is no certainty. The point is that we create mental constructs about what we think is real so that we can make sense of something solid. But that’s all illusion. We are energy beings, and energy is always flowing through us, around us and between us.
Some masters will tell you that nothing is real. This is why they say that. In its most fundamental form, the physical part of reality is virtually non-existent. Reality is a vast amount of space filled with energy. You have to think about this for the next nine months to get a sense of how changeable and uncertain reality is. Just give up all your expectations, thoughts and feelings about thoughts. Rid yourself of all mental constructs and illusions. Abandon the lie that the universe is physical. The physical part is insignificant compared to the amount of energy there is.
So that’s the first part of this: faith. You can believe in a physical universe, or you can learn to work with the Law of Attraction, which is all about energy. Energy moves to create circumstances. Energy condenses and becomes matter. Matter is energy. E = mc2.
Energy fields
For more than 300 years, our culture has formed around Isaac Newton’s version of a physical world, where objects are separated and bounce off each other like billiard balls. With the advent of quantum physics, we now realize that everything is made of vibrating energy. As the famous theoretical physicist Richard Feynman said, “Everything shakes.”
Energy condenses to create matter, but it is still essentially vibrating energy. Because all matter vibrates within a universal energy field, it sends waves into the field. Our bodies do the same, and even our brains and hearts send waves to the ether around us. The HeartMath Institute in California has conducted research showing that the brain and heart each produce a certain amount of energy in the form of an electromagnetic field.
“The heart generates the largest electromagnetic field in the body,” said Rollin McCraty, director of research at the HeartMath Institute. “The electric field as measured in an electrocardiogram (ECG) is approximately 60 times greater in amplitude than the brain waves recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG).”
According to McCraty, the heart, like the brain, generates a powerful electromagnetic field. HeartMath studies show that this powerful electromagnetic field can be detected and measured several meters away from a person’s body and between two people in close proximity.
You may have noticed if you have been alone in a room and suddenly – without seeing or hearing anything – you realize that someone else has entered the room. The human body generates an electromagnetic field that interacts with others. That human field is energy that extends the feet beyond the skin. You reach beyond your skin.
Synchronizing our brain and heart energies during meditation changes our electromagnetic field. Not only that, during meditation our DNA changes. Because we can consciously change our personal fields, we can send a new kind of wave into the universe.
The Coptic Gospel of Thomas (verse 22) refers to this determination that unites brain and heart: “Jesus said to them, ‘If you make the two one, and if you make the inside like the outside, and the outside like the inside, and the top like the bottom, … a likeness instead of a likeness; then will you enter? the kingdom.”
The idea behind the Law of Attraction is that, by bringing the heart and brain – feelings and thoughts – into a single energy, people can emit energy waves that interact with the universal energy field. This creates a shape or coherent pattern for whatever we desire. That consciously held, coherent pattern then naturally draws the object or circumstance of the matching energy frequency into our lives.
You have experienced this unity of mind and heart when you are ‘connected’ with someone across the room. Humans have been doing this unconsciously since ancient times, without really realizing what we were doing. Now we do that consciously through practice, with a pretty good idea of how we shape our lives – our circumstances – by holding our unique desire, by interacting with each other to increase the energy, and that pattern to paint in the universal energy. Astonishing!
