Slower living and conscious mornings
A few years ago I made one of the biggest changes of my life. After working in municipal government during the chaos of Covid and the 2020 election, I reached a breaking point. Before that I had been a librarian, but the pressure of those years caused me to completely burn out. I was mentally and emotionally exhausted; the constant grind had taken its toll and I knew something had to change.
Leaving my job felt both terrifying and necessary. Until then, blogging about native plants, herbs and nature was just a hobby, but in those difficult times it became my refuge. It wasn’t just about learning plants anymore; it was about reconnecting with something deeper: an urge to slow down and listen to life. That decision changed everything. It allowed me to embrace a slower way of life, and as fall approached it felt like the perfect season for reflection and change.
One of the first changes I made was the way I approached my mornings. In the past, I would wake up with my mind racing, consumed with thoughts of work and an endless to-do list before I even got out of bed. Now I consider my mornings sacred. Autumn in particular encourages me to slow down. The fresh air and softer light feel like an invitation to be more aware. I start my day with a warm cup of herbal tea; chamomile or lemon balm are favorites and make me feel grounded. I walk slowly through my morning, enjoying the silence before the day really begins.
I often go outside for just a few minutes to feel the cool breeze and watch the trees drop their leaves. It’s a simple, grounding practice that connects me to the natural rhythms of fall, and reminds me that even nature slows down during this season. This moment of silence helps me start my day with a calm intention, rather than rushing with the demands of the day ahead.
Here’s a list of actionable items you can incorporate into your slower life routine to create a more mindful morning:
-
Herbal tea meditation: Start with a warm cup of herbal tea, such as chamomile or lemon balm. Take a few deep breaths as you sip, focusing on the warmth and soothing scent.
-
Go outside for fresh air: Spend just a few minutes outside every morning to feel the cool breeze and observe the changing leaves so you can connect with nature’s slower pace.
-
Practice gentle stretching or yoga: Include a short stretching or yoga routine to ease the day and release all the tension from the night.
-
Breathe consciously: Take some time for deep breathing exercises. Inhale deeply, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly to center your mind and body.
-
Morning news: Reflect on your intentions for the day by journaling. Ask yourself, “What can I do today to slow down and nurture myself?” and “What part of fall am I most grateful for today?”
-
Gratitude exercise: Every morning, write down three things you are grateful for so you can set a positive tone for the day.
These simple exercises can help promote a sense of calm and presence, helping you tune into the slower rhythms of fall.
