How To Protect Yourself From A Passive-Aggressive Partner

Every relationship is different and each one will have its own unique challenges.

If a partner showcases passive-aggressive behaviour, it can make you feel lonely and undermined. If this behaviour continues, it can take its toll on your self-confidence and may cause the relationship to break down. With the right approach, you can healthily tackle the issue and foster a better relationship in the long run.

Here are some strategies to cope with passive-aggressive behaviour from a partner and simultaneously protect your wellbeing.

Identifying Passive-Aggressive Behaviour

Understanding what constitutes passive-aggressive behaviour is a good first step. From there, you can look out for signs and patterns.

Passive aggressive behaviour refers to a type of covert aggression that avoids open and clear communication. If someone is passive-aggressive towards you, it can make you feel upset, confused, frustrated or even vulnerable. This type of behaviour can exist amongst partners, family members, friends and more. Certain phrases are generally associated with passive-aggressive behaviour and often, being on the receiving end can make you feel uncomfortable.

Examples of passive-aggressive behaviour include:

  • Being defensive
  • Giving you the silent treatment
  • Not communicating with you
  • Not owning up to mistakes
  • Being inconsiderate
  • Provoking you
  • Being sarcastic

It can be helpful to identify the triggers that cause your partner to act in this way, allowing you to dive deeper into the root cause.

Effective Communication Techniques

Often, passive-aggressive people struggle to ask for what they want or explain why someone might have upset them. Bottling up these emotions can cause someone to express their frustration in a different way. As their partner, you should remain aware of the bigger picture and gently raise discussions about their behaviour and how it makes you feel. There may be something on their mind that is causing them to act in this way.

The most important thing here is to remain calm and enter the discussion with good intentions. Becoming hot-headed will only make the situation worse. Some people may not realise how their behaviour is affecting you and having an open and honest discussion could be the turning point in your relationship.

Setting Boundaries

Boundaries are key in any healthy relationship and they play a big role in helping to mitigate the impacts of this behaviour. Often, a passive-aggressive partner will make you feel as though your thoughts and opinions aren’t valid. It’s important not to let them disrespect you and to stand by your ideas. Explaining why you have a particular thought can help you to communicate better and calmly let them know that you don’t appreciate being undermined.

Seeking Professional Help

While some couples can find a way forward with honest and open conversations, others might need additional support. If passive-aggressive behaviour in your relationship is getting you down, don’t be afraid to seek professional help through relationship counselling or mediation.

Couples therapy can help you face the issues within your relationship with support from an external party. This can help you feel validated and less alone in your struggles. It can also offer support on how to move forward as a couple.

In some cases, it may be beneficial to seek support from reputable family law solicitors who are experienced in a range of cases, whether that’s divorce or financial matters. Seeking legal advice can make you feel more empowered and help you identify what needs to happen next.

Self-Care Strategies

Self-care is something we are all encouraged to pay attention to and particularly when facing challenges in our day-to-day lives. Looking after your physical and mental health can help you stay strong and face challenges, as opposed to letting them consume you. Try not to neglect your diet, sleep or exercise if you are experiencing issues within your relationship, otherwise the situation could spiral.

If you would like sound legal advice regarding your situation, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional support from reputable family lawyers who can deal with your case sensitively.
