In ancient times, various groups of people used seasonal terms to describe celestial events. June’s full moon, the Strawberry Moon, is named after delicious strawberries that often grew in the wild. Algonquin and Europeans applied this name to the last full moon of spring or the first full moon of summer, to indicate the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that would soon be harvested.
The Tlingit and Cree called the June moon the egg-laying moon and the birth moon. They recognized this month as a time of new life in many aspects of nature. As eggs hatch and animals are born, life reaches its peak of perfection. Grasses turn a deep shade of green, water flows in abundance, early fruits ripen and the sun’s rays bring a playful, joyful spirit to everyone who inhabits our planet.
Every month the moon reaches its maximum brightness on the night of the full moon. The Strawberry Moon reaches maximum illumination on Saturday, June 3 at 11:42 PM EST.
