Introducing Phexxi: An FDA-Approved, non-hormonal, birth control option
If you’ve been looking for a non-hormonal birth control option, Phexxi may be one to consider. Available as of September 2020, this FDA-approved vaginal gel contraceptive is significantly more effective than spermicides, the other topical (cream and gel) options.

Phexxi is 93% Effective
Phexxi is a cream that is inserted into the vagina (with an applicator) an hour before intercourse. When used correctly, Phexxi is 93% effective. Spermicides are typically 70-80% effective, birth control pills are about 92% effective when an occasional pill is missed (but up to 99% when used correctly), and condoms average about 85% effective at preventing pregnancy. Condoms can prevent STDs, while the others can’t.

How it Works
The natural pH level of a healthy vagina ranges from 3.5 to 4.5 (moderately acidic). During intercourse, male semen raises the vagina’s pH level to a 7 or 8 (neutral or mildly basic) to create an alkaline environment needed for sperm to survive and swim to fertilize the egg.
With Phexxi, the gel formula works to prevent this process and is designed to block the effects of semen. The gel keeps the vaginal pH at its original levels (moderately acidic, at 3.5 to 4.5) which makes for an inhospitable environment, effectively killing any viable sperm. In order for it to be effective, Phexxi must be used as a single dose into the vagina before having intercourse. It feels pretty “non-invasive,” since it takes advantage of the vagina’s natural acidity and sperm’s vulnerability to acidic environments.

The Phexxi gel is made up of lactic acid (which is naturally produced in the vagina and is found in dairy products like yogurt and kefir), citric acid (which gives citrus fruits their tart, sour taste), and potassium bitartrate (used in cooking as cream of tartar).

How to Get it
Phexxi needs a prescription but is covered by most insurances. It doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted diseases so you’ll need to decide if it’s right for you.

This non-hormonal option is a revolutionary break-through for birth control and a huge step forward for women’s health!
