Psycho-Emotional Symptoms of Menopause

Search for a numbered list of menopause symptoms on the web and you’ll find that there’s no one definitive inventory. One site says there are 34, another one says 66 – the cataloging varies widely. Since menopause research is relatively new and medical training for treatment is practically non-existent – and because each woman’s experience is unique – experts index symptoms in different ways. However, there are two main categories no matter the source:  physiological and psycho-emotional. Today, we’re focusing on the latter.

Before we dig in, it’s important to note that while we’re talking about menopause (the state of being for individuals with uteruses who haven’t had a menstrual cycle in 12 months), symptoms can start to show up in perimenopause (the years leading up to menopause). Additionally, not all women experience all of the following symptoms, and some don’t experience any at all.

In an article published by The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology entitled “Mood Changes During Menopause are Real. Here’s What to Know.”, a number of psycho-emotional symptoms are mentioned including:

  • Brain Fog
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Mood Swings
  • Irritability
  • Stress

Some symptoms are generally caused by the decrease in estrogen that naturally happens in menopause. Others are byproducts of physical changes taking place. For example, if you’re someone who’s suffering from frequent hot flashes, you may be losing sleep and focus, and experiencing sexual dysfunction. As a result, you might start to feel anxious and/or depressed.

Experts agree that you should find a healthcare provider who specializes in menopause diagnosis and treatment. Depending on the cause, there are several treatment options that address menopausal psycho-emotional symptoms such as Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT), talk therapy, medication, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, meditation, regular exercise, nutrition, and more. Assess your menopause symptoms and find the best treatment for you.
