If you haven’t caught this delightful FX-Hulu series yet, I highly recommend you do so. I’ve only seen the first episode, but I can’t wait to devour the rest of the season.
“Fleischman is in Trouble” is based on the much-heralded 2019 book by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, and while I expected terrific performances by the likes of Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Caplan, Adam Brody, Claire Danes and Josh Radner, I didn’t expect to see and hear so much about sex! I knew the essential plotline prior to screening: Toby Fleischman – a seasoned physician and father of two who works and lives on the Upper East Side of NYC – earnestly navigates his newish status as a divorcee. But it’s his midlife sexual awakening that’s a surprising and equally compelling adventure for the audience. It seems that while once he was a loser with the ladies, dating apps have now opened up entirely new worlds to him, and he is not taking one swipe for granted.
He makes a point of reporting his amorous news with long-term friends, Libby and Seth (Caplan and Brody) with whom he’s recently reunited, and each of them capitalize on it in their own respective ways.
The sex scenes are brief but hot, and we are privy to approximately 50 or so naked photos that come to us straight from Toby’s online matches, creatively displayed for us to view.
The writing is snappy and if you’re a New Yorker, you’ll immediately know those UES parents in their designer yoga gear and luxury penthouses, just waiting to judge those who don’t measure up. And we’re sure set up to loathe Toby’s ex-wife (Danes), but knowing Brodesser-Akner, there may be a surprise or two still yet to come.
I’m looking forward to more of this sexy, biting and super smart show, and I recommend you take it for a spin!
