On Halloween, a day full of tricks and treats, we see children running from house to house collecting treats until their pockets are full. With a sugar high and a lot of excitement, they go home in the dark to sort their loot. Most of our kids get a treat when they knock on the door. You don’t see many houses with deception or witchcraft, even though the day may have earned its name.
Some believe that Halloween was originally a pagan celebration to mark the end of the harvest season. Others believe that Halloween was the day when the door between this world and the afterlife opened, allowing spirits to enter. Halloween also has roots in Christian tradition, to eradicate paganism, and in Scottish heritage, where people dressed up as ghosts to protect themselves from ghosts.
Whichever historical route you take, today’s Halloween is filled with wonder and merriment. This year, trick-or-treaters will be able to enjoy their festivities under the light of a nearly full Hunter’s Moon, adding to the mystery and intrigue of this already enticing holiday.
So, in true traditional Chinese medicine fashion, we bring that intrigue back in.
The body never lies
Every day we spend countless hours communicating with others, discussing work and family events, disappointments and excitement. We solve the mystery of lost keys and forgotten information. But have you ever taken the time to figure out the mystery of your own body?
Your body is constantly talking to you. Every ache, every pain – every symptom – is a message from your body. It tells you that something is just not right. But are you giving these symptoms the same time and attention as you do other responsibilities in your life? Many of us take an aspirin, wait 20 minutes and go about our day. While that can help relieve pain, it shuts down the body. Instead, take the time to respect your body. Start noticing the signs and signals it sends you. Listen to these messages. And instead of approaching a ‘symptom’ from fear, see how the body might use these physical messages to talk to you.
We are often stuck in our thoughts. We think about situations so completely that we imagine every possible scenario. But the mind is logical. The mind is always changing. Life has become so difficult because we listen to the rational mind. If we really want to discover something greater than the rational mind, we must access the intuitive mind. The information will always be there. You can search for answers on Google or ask friends for advice. But this is all just information until you take it in and make it yours.
Trust your own body and your own intuition.
Realize your body’s power to heal.
The body never lies.
The answer will always be found within.
