The Positive Effects of Humming: A Simple Practice for Well-being

Humming, often dismissed as a random activity or a form of musical self-expression, has numerous positive effects that can have a transformative impact on both our emotional and physical well-being.

Stress reduction and relaxation

Humming works as a natural stress reliever. When we hum, we focus on the vibrations and sound, which helps us disconnect from the stressful thoughts of everyday life. The monotony of humming has a calming effect on the nervous system, lowers cortisol levels and promotes a feeling of relaxation.

Improving mood

Music, including the simple act of humming, has proven positive effects on mood. It causes the release of endorphins, the ‘feel-good’ hormones responsible for euphoria and joy. Humming can create a positive atmosphere, lift our spirits and improve our overall mood.

Promoting mindfulness

Humming focuses our attention on the sounds and vibrations in our bodies, promoting mindfulness by keeping us present and clearing the mind of distracting thoughts. Practicing mindfulness through humming can help relieve stress and increase mental clarity.
