Solar urticaria is a rare skin condition characterized by an itchy, red rash on the skin when exposed to sunlight. The rash appears a few minutes after sun exposure. Solar urticaria is also known as sun allergy. Solar urticaria is not caused by the heat of the sun, but by a reaction to UV radiation (ultraviolet radiation) in sunlight. Such reactions can also occur when exposed to ultraviolet light emitted by artificial light sources. Solar urticaria is different from heat rash. Heat rash is caused by clogged skin pores and accumulation of sweat under clothing, especially in the skin folds. This can happen even when there is no exposure to sunlight. Although solar urticaria typically results from exposure to sunlight, in some people it is believed to result from an overreaction of the immune system when their body is exposed to sunlight. People suffering from solar urticaria when exposed to sunlight release histamine (a chemical released by the immune system and known to cause allergic symptoms). This results in a reaction that leads to redness, rash and itching on the skin, along with other symptoms. This condition usually affects people in their mid-30s. Both men and women can be equally affected by this condition. Although anyone can suffer from solar urticaria, people with lighter skin tones are more at risk. Having a family history of this condition also increases the risk of developing the same. People who already suffer from certain allergies are also at risk for this condition. Furthermore, the use of dyes, perfumes, sunscreens or the use of certain medications such as antibiotics can cause solar urticaria. Solar urticaria causes a rash with round bumps on the skin when exposed to the sun. These bumps can form clusters on the affected skin area. The rash itches. A stinging or burning sensation may also be felt. Pain can sometimes also be felt. In some cases, fluid-filled eruptions called blisters and scabs form during eruptions. The rash disappears within a few hours after sun exposure ends. The reaction ranges from mild to severe. The intensity of the reaction depends on how much skin surface is exposed to the sun and for how long. When a large area of the skin is exposed for a long period of time, there is a risk of a serious reaction. In severe cases, headache, nausea, vomiting and dizziness may also occur. Rare solar urticaria can lead to a serious reaction called anaphylaxis. It is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, wheezing, rapid heart rate, feeling faint, confusion, swelling in the deep layers of the skin, anxiety, low blood pressure and loss of consciousness.
Homeopathic treatment
There is a wide scope of treatment for solar urticaria within homeopathy. Homeopathic medicines naturally moderate the overactive immune system to help heal the rash in acute cases and control accompanying symptoms such as itching, burning, stinging and pain associated with the eruptions. They also help with long-term (chronic) cases of solar urticaria by gradually reducing the intensity and frequency of symptoms. Homeopathic medicines are prescribed individually in each case of solar urticaria after a detailed case evaluation based on the characteristic symptoms. Therefore, it is advised to take any homeopathic medicine for solar urticaria under the supervision of a homeopathic doctor. Although these drugs are very safe to use, caution is advised in severe cases of anaphylaxis. In case of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition, homeopathic treatment is not recommended. In such cases, immediate help through the conventional treatment method is highly recommended.
