Waiting For the Abundance of Spring

In the words of the famous philosopher Laozi, “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”

Bulbs are planted in late autumn in anticipation of spring flowering. Above the surface we sit and wait. We wait for the freeze of winter to release into the warm sunshine, loosening the soil and allowing the rain to nourish and moisten the earth beneath. As we wait above, the ground we are looking at seems lifeless, yet it is teeming with life! There are many incredible things happening beneath the surface. Roots release moisture into the soil to protect plants and stabilize temperatures. Many animals dig deep into the ground to protect themselves from the elements. Others hibernate or rely on mechanisms they have developed to survive even the bleakest weather. Yet many microbes remain active in winter soil. Without all this invisible work we would not have the abundance of Spring.

As we transition from winter to spring, we often have days of warm, sunny weather, followed by cold, rainy days where we are chilled to the core. Sometimes these swings occur in one day, with freezing temperatures in the morning and spring or even summer-like temperatures in the afternoon. Nature is in no hurry.

Nature has much to teach us about how to move with ease through life’s constant changes. Seasonal patterns are life lessons in patience and promise. The silence of winter teaches us to trust that change is happening, even when it is invisible to the eye.

While spring is approaching, the seasonal essence is still winter. So during this time of transition, slow down, turn inward, and be kind to yourself. Remember to stay warm and keep your skin covered. Even though the temperature feels warm, the seasonal essence is still cold. Rest deeply in anticipation of your own spring renewal.
