A famous quote from Henry David Thoreau says, “It’s not what you look at that counts, it’s what you see.”
We occupy our eyes all day long looking at people and things: people, computers, data, pets, food, trees, etc. But what do you actually see when you look? Is the food on your plate an apple, or is it a fruit that has survived the cold winter on a tree that has taken almost ten years to bear fruit? Are the people in front of you your children, or are they growing and changing teenagers struggling to find their independent voice?
If you really stop and look at what and who is in front of you, you will probably see them differently. Slow down and take a deep breath. The next time you’re at work, having a conversation, walking around town, or on the train, go beyond just looking. Go deeper and see the complex picture that each person, place and thing brings into your life. You may be surprised at what you discover.
