Why Men Lose Their Sex Drive

A lower sex drive is one of the most common, and least talked about, concerns men experience.

Many men assume losing libido is “just part of getting older,” but that’s not always the full story. In reality, sex drive can be influenced by hormones, stress, sleep, mental health, medications, relationship dynamics, and overall physical wellness.

At Maze Men’s Health, low libido is something we evaluate frequently, because changes in sexual desire can sometimes signal larger underlying health issues.

What Causes Low Sex Drive in Men?

There is rarely one single cause.

Instead, low libido is often connected to a combination of physical and psychological factors, including:

  • Low testosterone
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Depression
  • Poor sleep
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Certain medications
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Chronic health conditions
  • Weight gain and metabolic issues
  • Excessive alcohol or substance use

In many cases, men experiencing erectile dysfunction may also notice a decline in sexual desire due to frustration, performance anxiety, or reduced confidence.

The Testosterone Connection

Testosterone plays an important role in male sexual desire, energy, mood, and overall well-being.

As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline. But some men experience a more significant drop that can contribute to:

  • Reduced libido
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Decreased motivation
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Mood changes

At Maze Men’s Health, hormonal evaluation is often an important part of understanding why a man’s sex drive has changed.

Stress, Burnout, and Mental Health Matter Too

Sexual health is not just physical.

Chronic stress, anxiety, poor sleep, burnout, and mental health struggles can significantly affect libido, even in otherwise healthy men.

Modern life plays a larger role than many people realize:

  • high stress,
  • constant work pressure,
  • poor sleep,
  • and lack of recovery

can all impact hormone levels, energy, and sexual interest.

Research has also shown strong links between depression, anxiety, and reduced sexual desire in men.

When Should Men Seek Help?

Many men wait years before talking about low libido.

But persistent changes in sex drive should not simply be ignored, especially if they are affecting confidence, relationships, mood, or quality of life.

The good news:
low libido is often treatable once the underlying causes are identified.

At Maze Men’s Health, evaluation may include:

  • hormone testing,
  • medical assessment,
  • sexual health evaluation,
  • and individualized treatment approaches depending on the root cause.

Because sexual health is closely connected to overall health.

The Bottom Line

Losing your sex drive is common, but it is not something men should feel embarrassed about or forced to “just live with.”

Whether the cause is hormonal, psychological, physical, or a combination of factors, understanding what is driving the change is the first step toward improving it.

And for many men, the right evaluation and treatment can make a meaningful difference in both sexual wellness and overall quality of life.
