Q&A With Master Lu: What’s the Scoop on Qigong Systems?

Ask: If someone were to try Qigong for the very first time, what difference would they see? Wu Ming Qigong and another form of Qigong?

Answer: There are thousands of different Qigong systems. Each system has different ways of trying to understand the universe. Qigong can be the final destination, the vehicle or a guideline. It depends on the school of the system, how you use Qigong and for what purpose.

Different Qigong systems are like different paths you can take to reach the top of the mountain. Some paths are easy at the beginning, but so difficult at the end. On these trails you have no chance of reaching the top of the mountain once you reach the last challenge. Some trails are difficult, but can lead you to the top of the mountain. Other paths are not new paths. They are organic paths that many masters have used for thousands of years to reach the top of the mountain and come back down. So it really depends on which system you follow.

Ask: Why should you not combine Qigong systems? Why can’t you try it? Wu Ming Qigong with another Qigong system?

Answer: Traditionally, Qigong is the journey to discover the truth. Most people try to use Qigong for healing. The more powerful Qigong systems are more dangerous. It’s a double-edged sword. Just like a strong medicine always has a side effect. You cannot combine two types of medicines. Think of Qigong as a medicine. It is the healing method. Some forms of Qigong come from this angle, others from a different angle.

So if you put the two different angles of Qigong together, they start to fight with each other and can cause a side effect. No one knows how to fix it because no one knows what’s happening. For your safety, most Qigong masters will tell you: don’t mix different types of Qigong exercises.
