Ecstatic dance –
A dance of our soul – a purifying experience, in the middle of the dance floor.
What can you expect at an Ecstatic Dance?
If you’ve never been to an Ecstatic Dance, from the outside it might look like a hippie party that got out of hand, with everyone high. But the opposite is true.
There is no alcohol or other intoxicants in Ecstatic Dance. Very clear rules create a safe space here, so that you can fully surrender to the moment and express yourself freely, whatever that looks like. It’s about expressing your authentic self in all facets of your movement. It is mediation in movement, where you dance yourself into a state of ecstasy and often have a communal cathartic experience.
However, in order to experience this freedom, clear preconditions are also necessary, which can always vary slightly worldwide. In general, the following rules apply:
– No alcohol or other intoxicants
– There is no talking while dancing
– One respects the other’s personal space
– No cell phones or photos
The event usually starts with an opening circle, in which all the conditions for the coming hours are explained again, and then we descend into a short mediation together. Then your individual dance journey within the community begins. Simply entering a space where you don’t have to prove anything can be very healing.
The music starts quietly and then builds to a climax. Within the climax, most people really panic, but are then gently brought back by the music, only to be catapulted back up again with the next wave. Until at the end they finally find peace again in a kind of Shavasana.
