In ancient times, people trusted nature because of their survival. As such, they developed a respect for all living beings and became sharply aware of the patterns. The monthly full moon was used as a way to follow the seasons and was often named after seasonal events, such as foods that were in abundance or flowers that were in bloom. The full moon of June coincided with the transition from spring to summer, as well as the ripening of wild strawberries.
Both Algonquin and European people fought the name Entir Strawberry Moon on the first full moon of the summer, to indicate the maturation of “June-bearing” strawberries that would soon be collected.
The Tlingit and Cree called the Moon of June the egg that was moon and the birth man. They recognized this month as a time of new life in many aspects of nature. While eggs come out and animals are born, life reaches a peak perfection. Grasses become a deep shade of green, waters flows with abundance, early fruit ripen and the rays of the sun bring a playful, joyful spirit to everyone who inhabits our planet.
